Thursday’s Children is more than a musical. It’s a partnership project for history education involving artists, cultural organizations, educators, historians, legal experts, and other humanities scholars. The project was designed to help students and audience members understand significant events in Iowa history – the black armband protest and the case of Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District – and explore the impact of those events on our schools and our society.

• 8 History Through The Arts performances of Thursday’s Children for 2,000 Iowa students in grades 6-12, presented with interactive arts and humanities workshops, including mock trials on the Tinker case
• Scholarships for low-income students to attend the History Through The Arts program free of charge
• 8 performances of Thursday’s Children for audiences of all ages
• A pre-performance discussion panel with humanities scholars and Mary Beth Tinker on October 23
• A post-performance Meet The Composer discussion with the authors/composers on October 24
• A open forum on school dress codes and the impact of the Tinker case on student expression on October 26 at the Des Moines Library
• A pre-performance discussion of the Tinker case with a panel of legal experts on October 29
• A 1960’s Dance Party, presented in conjunction with Gateway Dance Theatre on October 30, and
• Other educational events and activities including a Vietnam War Exhibit at the State Historical Museum.
